As mentioned in this post, this is my very own project for a room dedicated to my office, make-up, brushes, studio photo, vanity and when I’ll have friends over it has to host a bed. I warn you, this room is old and tiny and my budget is tiny too but after checking many Libby Langdon videos or other similar videos on Youtube, it’s amazing what you can do easily without breaking the bank!
So, we bought a house 2 years ago, actually it’s a very old chalet, it means that it requires a huge lot of renovation work… from scratch and in every single room.
I love to see projects before and after, always very curious about the results and ideas, amazing what can be done with a bit of effort and a lot of imagination and this is exactly what I will be doing here! Then if I don’t like it, I change it but I am the one who will be spending here most of my free time so the most important thing is that it’s efficient, time saving and that I love it!
There has been a lot of work already since we started 2 years ago and it will carry on for a long while but it’s ok, we’ll get there.
The house layout
This chalet was originally in 3 parts with separate entrances, the first step was to link the 3 parts and make it only 1 house.
|Basement||Laundry room, storage||Laundry room, storage||Laundry room, sauna + steam|
|Ground floor||Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room||Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room, veranda||Stays the same, the bathroom will be destroyed and rebuilt from scratch at the end of 2014 or when time/budget permits|
|1st floor||Kitchen, living room, bathroom, room1 (office, clothes, books), room2 (main room), balcony||stairs, living room, bathroom, room1 (office, clothes, books… and cat when we are away), room2 (main room), terrace||stairs, bathroom, room1, room2, room3 (ex-living room will be our main room and bf’s office since it has a separate corner), terrace|
The bathroom on the first floor has been destroyed to leave space for the stairs to go to the ground floor and the 1st floor kitchen is becoming right at this precise moment a bathroom!
The kitchen on the ground floor has completely been destroyed and refurnished but it’s not 100% done, just about 80%.
The 1st floor balcony has become a terrace extended to fit the whole roof of the veranda.
All the house windows have been replaced, 2 remaining but they will also be done.
The extent of the renovation works is quite big… 🙁 We couldn’t start the “brush-room” until we had one kitchen in place and some other things done but it’s about time NOW…
The “brush-room” layout
The old walls where like those of a Swiss Chalet : wood panels. I have started to remove those. 3 walls out of 4 had them all over, looked like that (this was a temporary layout hence the lights are not in place) :
The only two things that will stay after the works in this pic is the vanity Besta Burs from Ikea, and the old piano chair that I will upcycle, (change the feet and cover the black leather).
There are two windows in this room: one is facing the veranda and has to be changed (the new one has been ordered).
This is the little veranda facing my brush-room and the veranda has all windows around it:
The veranda is an extension to the ground floor and it’s new, since that old window in the brush-room is not directly facing the outside anymore, we had to add a second window on the only outside wall.
Behind the reddish “curtains” that I stippled there temporarily there are… cables, tubes, horrible things… Not sure I even want to show … but here it is in small pic :
The wood and old isolation are now gone :
We will proceed to the cleaning of the walls and pre-preparation today and tomorrow so that we can put this week the new structure for the plaster boards and mount them.
What will change
The roof, floor and the walls: everything. The old veranda window will also be replaced by a new one.
The glass desk will change as glass was not a good idea… in winter it’s too cold and when my arms touch it it’s not comfortable at all. If you are considering a glass desk, think about that … 🙂
The Ikea Alex drawers that I have today will change, I will replace them by Ikea kitchen units with narrow drawers, more solid and better built to prevent dust to enter. Each drawer unit is 80cm wide 60cm deep. The handles I will probably order them on Ebay (or whereever I find them) so that they are a bit more bold and beautiful that the ones from Ikea… but I don’t want to order them until I tried the room paint and see what color combination works best, then I will order the handles accordingly.
The 2 computer screens will be hanging on the wall instead of lying on the desk, that will allow me a less deep desk and they will be aligned with the Ikea kitchen units. I will just put a white lacquered top on the 2 narrower kitchen units. Then the other drawers units on the right will have a transparent cover so that you could see nice brushes or make-up items (I was thinking of a glass door that I could lift open).
The white vanity will remain the same for now, today it looks like this :
I have no walls so… that’s pretty awful, I just temporarily placed a curtain to protect me from the dust but as you see I cannot wait any longer and the works need done … they should have started before but I could not.
On the other side of the desk I have the lights for the pictures and I was using the old kitchen units that we removed on the 1st floor to “organize” my make-up here but these are going too.
The 2 big black lights will be hanging on the wall instead of lying on the stands, that will save some space.
The Ikea Malm will go.
The main idea is that no furniture (or very little) will be on the floor, most of it will be hanging on the walls and will be as narrow as possible. I will have to transfer all my make-up to a different setting.
Yesterday I have been removing the items and placing them in protected boxes :
All the contents from these two kitchen units are now away and awaiting…
The brushes will move from here :
and here :
To the new long drawers from Ikea that I showed you before.
I will also install thin glass shelves on the walls to showcase the most beautiful brushes and kabukis, just like in a museum…. 😛
I am a bit crazy about organization, my drawers look like this today :
I feel the need to label everything when I can and see the label when I open the drawer…
I also would like to install Ikea Ribba picture shelves like this :
You can do many things with them, store beauty books to decorate, brushes, or compacts like I did :
I think it can be useful and nice to look at… not sure about the weight though.. instead of 3 screws I may need 20 to hold the weight… 😀 but you know, it was just an idea…
Ideas and prerequisites…
I need to be able to quickly install a portable bed(s) so not much furniture lying around, we talked about this.
I would like to install shelves like this with lights in between the top of the shelves and the roof. The shelves would be 2 or 3 on each wall depending on how many I can line up…
The mirror.. it’s a good question. I think I am not the only one who finds the mirrors are always too far away…
I have at least two options that I consider…
Either install a mirror like the ones that you put on the bathroom but it’s not that sexy…
and if you take a nice looking one, it’s very expensive. The nice thing about it is that behind the mirror you have storage room and that the mirror is much closer to you. You could install a large fake frame to make it a bit more unique but still, looks very bathroomy to me.
There are others that have some installations behind so that you can put them a bit away from the wall and closer to you:
The other solution is to attach a wooden base on this :
and then attach a mirror on the wood and when you need to mirror to be close you just have to move the base and bring it towards you… I already bought that Uppleva from Ikea for the computer screens so who knows, maybe it’s a good idea for the mirror but it cannot be a very heavy mirror… we’ll see, can be dangerous…
I am loving this mirror actually:
But depending on what I need, it may not work at all…
Underneath the vanity, I want to attach this :
This white thing is a kitchen organizer from Ikea that has a thing at the back to hook it on a bar.
I have a lot of hair stylers and I use them all… but in a drawer they take a lot of space so here would be the best place for them. I will reuse part of the things that we had in our old kitchen anyway but I may need to add a deco touch to them.
I also bought a second chair like this that I will install in the brush-room to read or relax… Then I can take the other one from the living room and have a comfy chat with my friends surrounded by brushes 🙂
Ideas for the paint
The paint will be very bold. Actually really bold. I fell in love with several colors from this shop, the Kenya, Cream, Navy and Mulberry. They are actually darker than in the pic here, here they appear washed out.
The bronze is absolutely stunning, has a metallic finish that makes me go crazy, seriously I am loving it and needing it…
In reality it looks much warmer than in the first swatch pic above, it’s probably going to be too much for a full wall but part of the wall or just prints on top of a brownish/taupe wall it will look amazing. It’s also a paint you can use on top of other paints, frames, etc and that gives me many ideas.. I was thinking of painting this for example to restore it and give a more magical touch to the room:
So.. maybe Mulberry for the roof, maybe Navy (some of these paints have a gel finish), one accent wall in dark taupe or brown and the others a lighter tone. I will bring testers home and have fun checking…
I bought these two cushions some time ago because I love abstract or geometric patterns (better than flowers, really not a fan of girly deco unless it’s Japanese and abstract …), these are taupe and white and I thought they would look nice in my imaginary room… together with a velours deco…
For example I prefer this style rather than pink or flowers :
For the curtains I wanted to put this kind of panels :
BUT instead of plain panels I wanted to put calligraphy painted scrolls (that you can find on Ebay and that are signed or not by artists, depending on how much you can pay…).
My bf told me : “don’t forget the sun hits the window so your scrolls may be damaged“. Yep, my bf is the brain of the operation, I hadn’t thought of that. I will either use old scrolls (I can even paint them myself LOL) or just stick them or we’ll see…
If you wander what scrolls are:
For the roof, I don’t have much choice … it’s low, I can touch it with my fingertips so there is not much I can do about it but since I won’t have much space in the walls for pictures or patterns, I wanted to put 4 frames like this against the roof in the center :
Inside I don’t know, maybe patterns or pictures or lights depending on the final look…
If you search for “fake roof lights” you can see amazing ideas for interior roofs, I am very inspired and intend to do something nice about it, despite being so low in this room. Lights can help a lot…
I have other things that are lying around and that I want to use to create deco things or frames, like these Rock and Republic empty compacts for example:
For the floor I would like something earthy and glossy… I took many pics of patterns and stone-looking floors but until the paint is done I cannot decide…
I will update this as I go when progress has been made… So, without any further due… LET’S ROCK THIS ROOM 🙂
FIRST UPDATE – 09 September 2014
It was a great day, started by the postman bringing me ALL of the new Suqqu palettes that I ordered on the 5th of August… the 3 trios and the combined quad… rââââ For the first time in my life I haven’t swatch them yet because I want to try to take a pic tomorrow before I use them… will I be able to resist… ??? hmmmmmm
I am still waiting for a few palettes (Addiction and Ipsa) and other bits and pieces 😀 so it’s an exciting parcel-week!
Today…. I managed to empty the room completely (geez how did I manage to put so much stuff in there!!!) our living room is a now an official huge mess, we are going to loose the cat in there somewhere…. or he is going to have a brain crash because he plays with every single little thing he finds on the floor so by the end of the week he will be totally burned-out!
Not only my room contents have all been moved into the living room but the isolation, wood and plaster boards are now also there…
We bought our materials in Hornbach, it’s THE do-it-yourself, they have everything and they are so professional and informed that they need a mention, even though it’s a beauty blog 😀
We paid more than 1000 usd for the basic material… ouch… not even the paint or the deco… and that shop is the cheapest one around. We rented their truck -a bargain- 25usd per hour, I don’t know how you can beat that though!
I was laughing at the truck because it’s written “ta sueur” that I am pointing at there, it means “YOUR OWN SWEAT” … at that precise moment I was not only reaaaaally disgusting sweaty, but covered with plaster 😀 you can’t see it as the phone pic is bad but I was having a lot of fun !
Anyway… we have the material to work with tomorrow, which is great because the calculations weren’t easy, I know it’s only ONE room, but the walls are all different, each one pointing to a different temperature and I am always very cold so I need quite a lot of isolation in there 😀 Winters are tough here! we have enough 6 months per year!
Tomorrow I will remove the old roof and sanitize the walls, not a lot of fun but hey, it’s happening !!!!! *if you could see me now…. jumping and typing guuuurrrrllss*
Oh about the new furry member : it’s the little big kitten… now keeping company to our adorable but old border collie… they love each other so so much it’s unbelievable, here some pics just for the name of love… 🙂
“Keep calm and destroy”
So… my day was just about trying not to loose my mind with things that “looked easy” but weren’t… bottom line: always look at the hidden side of the “easy task”. Removing solid wood was mastered with strength and liberation. Removing white polystyrene was a nightmare, all the roof was covered with it, partially glued… a huge mess… anyway, today, all the remaining unhealthy things are out.
I cleaned the walls with a special product to sanitize and remove spores/humidity etc, 3 times!!! Then I added a coat of humidity protector all over just to prevent any damage in the future.
Smells clean now but the people who built this room in the past were
animals beasts, I am sorry to be so rude but seriously there are big holes and huge defaults that we have to repair tomorrow. I will spend a lot of time in here and it has to be a healthy, warm and solid place. At the end we spent a lot of money trying to save a house but I wonder if we should have bought something else somewhere else for the same price, we would probably have made it 🙁 anyway… I am not afraid of working I just want to get it over with and stop discovering new issues!!!
After many hours cleaning, brushing, shouting, dancing, I was signaling to my bf I was STILL ALIVE .. looking exhausted but still kicking..
After so much work I thought I deserved one of my fav deserts even though I shouldn’t! I cannot eat lactose, gluten, eggs, etc.. (this is not allergy but intolerance..) but I can make one or two little exceptions sometimes … I LOVE cheesecake ice cream !!! 😀 😀 😀
As soon as I started to have some rest our little “Shadow” came to see me… Can you spot the swatches on my hand ??? this how you recognize a hardcore beauty-addict!!! One break=one swatch 😀 I received the new Addiction Black palette and spent a little while playing around with it 😉
To be continued… This room may take some time but I’ll get there for sure !!
UPDATE 11th September 2014
Starting the structure!
I feel like I learned a lot today, drilling, sawing, or even using 3 different products to fill unwanted wall holes, not one but three products!!!…every hole has its product in men’s land 😀 No more guilty feelings about using 30 different brushes for foundation! 😀
One product was really fun to use, you mix water and powder and it becomes solid like a cement IN 3 MINUTES! When you reach the 3 minutes if you are not done applying, it’s too late. I was trying to calculate the exact quantities when my bf asked “What are you doing ?” DUUUHH I am calculating the quantities!! well… he said “no need to calculate you feel when it’s ready, you add water when you need, you add product when you need…” Yeah right, and when I feel like it’s ready it’s already too late! A cake mixture does not go solid in a blink so it’s NOT like baking!! It was like magic fast, super fun and not only I enjoyed it but I did a great job!
Some things are definitely easier than others and I don’t mind hard work but sawing is not something I like… seriously hate it. Electric sawing even more.
Still far from ready but I am so impatient that I’ll use anything to get it done ASAP!
UPDATE 12th September 2014
More drilling, sawing, etc… Today I learned to do so many things that I feel quite proud of myself, even the sawing is better now, the secret is to use strength and not be scared about it or it looses precision.
While my bf was showing me how to place the structure holes and drill with the bigger drill on the cement walls, I secretly took a pic of him while he was teaching 😀
There are precise reasons why the structure is like that (it’s not finished and it’s not perfect because it’s my very first one…) On the top of it, there is going to be a lot of weight so I am reinforcing it. You’ll see later on why 🙂
I started the day wearing 2 t-shirts and 2 fleece jackets -I was really cold and when I am cold I become “wonder-onion”, it’s the only way to survive in this village. By the end of that structure, I was only wearing 1 t-shirt and sweating like a beast…
But these two little guys were happily resting and playing 😀
UPDATE 21st September 2014
The less interesting part of this project is still ongoing: the walls and the roof!
The architect wanted me to put the heater under the main window -which is clever I admit – but I didn’t know that, so I had made all the plans with the heater under the OTHER window… Since these are triple glass windows I convinced him and it’s still ok to move it to the side of the room… anyway, things that I haven’t considered as I did not know 🙂
The plugs have to be integrated in the wall the best way possible, near the vanity, the office, behind the mirror (that I still haven’t chosen), and I will have a lot of lights between the shelves and the roof so that is quite a lot of work and electricity is something I just don’t dare to touch so my bf takes care … This weekend we worked a lot, the architect and the electrician have to come to check things out but we are progressing nicely.
Then I get distracted and start play with a drill and polishing paper 😀 and do this:
You definitely get some additional “powers” when you know how to operate the construction tools and I intend to use my “new powers” in a very creative way 😀
By the way, have you ever seen a cat’s paw in detail ? Sooooo cute …
